Lauren E. Oakes is an ecologist and human-natural systems scientists who teaches at Stanford University in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. She is currently writing The Canary Tree, a book about finding faith in the ability of people to cope with a rapidly changing planet. It chronicles her 6-year journey along the outer coast of southeast Alaska studying forests impacted by climate change and how people respond to the loss of a sacred tree species. Lauren received her PhD from Stanford University's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources. She has written about her research for The New York Times.
