Katie Gilmartin

Katie Gilmartin’s checkered past includes stints as a buoyant union organizer, bona fide sex researcher, and engaged college professor. She now teaches printmaking classes and runs the Queer Ancestors Project, devoted to forging sturdy relationships between Queer young artists and their ancestors. Her illustrated noir mystery, Blackmail, My Love, is set in San Francisco in the Dark Ages of Queerdom: 1951. Winner of Lambda and Indiefab Gold Awards, the narrative serves as a revelatory history of San Francisco’s sexually complex underground. Katie has a short story, “White Horse,” in the collection Oakland Noir, forthcoming April of 2017. And she’s a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence: Sister Plush Lovebud of the Velveteen Vulva.

In Blackmail, My Love: Josie O’Conner searches for her brother, a private dick who disappeared while investigating a blackmail ring targeting Queers. Josie adopts Jimmy’s trousers and wingtips as well as his investigation, battling to clear his name and halt the blackmailers. Along the way she rubs shoulders with a sultry chanteuse running a dyke tavern called Pandora’s Box; gets intimate with a red-headed madame operating a brothel from the Police Personnel Department; and conspires with the star of Finocchio’s, a dive so disreputable it's off limits to servicemen – so every man in uniform pays a visit.
