I'm a filmmaker who drifted into writing a book when lab debt on movies left no other choice. Fortunately, my "Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Prices" how-to found a home at Viking Penguin, and I got to carry on (glad I wasn't then aware of the odds against getting something published!). Since then (late 1980s), I've revised it a couple times, heard that Vin Diesel gives it credit for his career (so does Kevin Smith/CLERKS), and have written/directed & produced over 25 low/no-budget features, mostly improv, many 10-day start-to-finish whirlwind shoot/edits via my Feature Workshops.
Between movie projects – hard to maintain a production flow without investors – I've been able to completed a 'conspiracy theory' trilogy of novels entitled "Kennedy's Twins," (first novel "Black President," published in 2008 by Picnic publishing, UK, was a 1st draft in 1999). Next came an improv moviemaking book "The Miracle of Morgan's Cake – Production Secrets of a $15,000 Sundance Feature." Morgan's Cake, made and starring my son Morgan, saw some good festival play – New Directors/New Films (NY), Berlin International, Sundance – and sold nationally to the Learning Channel.
In the new Millennium, I took on the challenge of writing a short novel, COLD, in which I fictionalized my father's escape from a WWI Siberian prison camp, loosely basing the first person account on his two-year/5000 km journey home. And finally seem to be closing in on my memoir, "Twelve Dead Frogs and Other Stories," from which my Lit Crawl reading, "Joe's Sandwiches," is excerpted. So, a lot of books getting done(!), a bunch arriving at the same pub-date after a ten-year effort on various fronts. Some or all of my titles are now available at Amazon.co.uk, US, and Amazon.de, for a 'Look inside.' My movies can be found at fandor.com and https://vimeo.com/rickschmidt/vod_pages
